You were raised in a musical family. Is there ever a point in your life you entertained not following that path, and if so, what would you be doing instead?
When I was around 10 years old I wanted to be an architect or interior designer. I became interested in it because I used to love watching interior design shows with my mum, as well as building houses on the Sims. At about 12 years old I was very certain I wanted to sing and be in the music industry, and then I began writing songs at 14 years old. Ultimately if music didn’t work out I would still be in a creative industry of some sort.
You split your time between Sydney and LA. What do you find is a jarring difference between the two cities in regards to the music scene?
The community of artists and creatives definitely feels a whole lot bigger in LA, especially within the RnB genre. Being in the entertainment industry is more of the norm there, and you end up meeting many other people who are pursuing a career in the arts. Sydney has a much closer knit scene which I really like as well. It is easy to connect with other creatives as most people know each other mutually.
Does fashion play into being 'Tash' the artist?
Fashion definitely plays a role in my persona as an artist! It gives me an opportunity to explore clothes I wouldn’t normally wear, and pushes me to think beyond myself and look at this as a brand. I think finding your aesthetic as an artist is just as important as the music.
You just completed a couple of intimate shows in Sydney and Melbourne. What do you enjoy the most and least about playing shows?
I loved playing my Sydney and Melbourne shows so much! The part that I enjoyed the most was seeing people in audience singing along with a lot of the lyrics, and feeling their support in person. It was truly a special experience and I didn’t realise how passionate my audience is in Australia. It’s hard to find something I least enjoyed, but I would say most stressful part for me trying not to be a perfectionist about my performance. I am very used to a studio environment where every inflection of your voice is magnified. Singing live is a different ball game and these shows have helped me to realise it is a different skill in itself.
